5 Common Myths About Dental Implants Debunked: Separating Fact from Fiction

Posted on

We want to clear the air if you are hesitating about getting dental implants because you’ve heard conflicting stories about them. Plenty of myths surrounding dental implants may make you think twice, but these myths are based on misconceptions. The implant process has come a long way in recent years, and it’s now one of the most successful dental procedures available. We’ve compiled five of the most common myths about dental implants and addressed them for you.

Myth #1: Getting dental implants is really painful.

Dental implant surgery is not painful at all. Dr. Gilbert numbs the area before the procedure and uses nitrous oxide or IV sedation for patient comfort. Patients do not feel any pain at all during surgery. Following surgery, there is some discomfort, but most of our patients are surprised by how minimal the pain is. Over-the-counter pain relievers and ice packs can relieve any discomfort. Within a week, all pain is gone.

Myth #2: If you get dental implants when young, you’ll have to get them replaced periodically.

Although most patients get dental implants later in life, you can get dental implants at any point in your life. The implants fuse with the surrounding bone, becoming a part of the jawbone for stability and longevity. Do not be afraid to get dental implants, as they are designed to last for decades and usually last a lifetime.

Myth #3: You aren’t a candidate for dental implants.

Even if you were told in the past that you don’t qualify for implant surgery, you may be eligible today. In the last few years, impressive advancements in dental technologies and techniques have allowed more people to get implants. Bone grafting, zygomatic implants, and All-On-X procedures have all made it easier for people to qualify as candidates for dental implants.

Myth #4: Dental implants are high maintenance.

Nothing could be farther from the truth! Maintenance is simple once the implants have fused with the surrounding jawbone and the permanent restorations are attached. Flossing daily and brushing twice daily will keep your dental implants in good shape. Continue to see your dentist twice a year for checkups and dental cleanings. There is no need to use special cleaning supplies, remove dentures at night, or have dentures repaired or relined.

Myth #5: Dental implants often fail.

No, they don’t. Dental implant surgery is one of the most successful forms of oral surgery, with a success rate of over 95%. When they fail, it is usually because a patient does not follow their post-op care instructions or has a complicated illness. With proper care and good health, your implant placement should be successful and last a lifetime.
