About Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery, also known as “reduction mammoplasty”, is one of the less talked-about types of plastic surgery, despite its popularity. This life-enhancing procedure can be used to increase a patient’s quality of life in multiple ways!

The Procedure

During reduction mammoplasty, excess fat, tissue, and skin are removed from the breast, which can also be reshaped and resized to get the look you want. The areola is reduced in size and positioned higher to a more flattering position. The surgery typically takes 3 to 5 hours, and an overnight stay in the hospital is not usually required.

The Goals of Breast Reduction

  • Size: One of the main goals of breast reduction surgery is to reduce the size of the breasts so that they no longer cause the patient discomfort. Large, heavy breasts can cause pain in the back and neck and negatively impact a patient’s posture.
  • Activity: Another common goal of reduction mammoplasty is to increase activity and mobility in patients. Athletic patients with large breasts may be troubled by the limits that large breasts impose on their physical activity.
  • Asymmetry: Another reason we see women in our office for breast reduction surgery is due to asymmetry. It is very common for one breast to be larger than the other and we can help even them out.
  • Aesthetics: And finally, some people are simply unhappy with the size and look of their breasts. If this is the case, then the breasts can be reshaped and lifted at the same time so that they look better proportioned to the rest of your body.

Why You Should Consider It

Anyone with large breasts that has pain or discomfort as a result of the size of their breasts should consider reduction surgery. The procedure can bring great relief to the patient and increase her quality of life. There is no predetermined age range for a person to have breast reduction surgery. As long as you are healthy, you are probably a good candidate!
