Signs You Need Eyelid Surgery (and a Browlift)

Posted on

If the eyes are windows to the soul, what are people seeing when they look at yours? What do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you notice, at first glance, a sad or tired expression? It may actually be excess skin on your eyelids and around your eyes rather than fatigue. Or maybe your vision is literally blocked due to hanging skin from your upper eyelids.

If your eyes seem chronically puffy, your lower eyelids sag down heavily, you have difficulty putting on eye makeup, or you have trouble seeing, it’s time to consider eyelid surgery and/or a brow lift, two procedures our trusted and experienced board-certified Facial Cosmetic and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr. Gilbert uses to rejuvenate the eye area and overall facial appearance.

What is an eye lift?

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure we use to remove excess eyelid skin or bulging fat around our eyes. It’s quite common for the skin around our eyes to become lax as we age and for the membranes around our eyes to weaken, causing the fat that cushions our eyeballs to herniate and protrude.

This cosmetic surgery can refresh your appearance by reducing under-eye bags, lifting sagging lids, and sculpting your eye contours. One of the most pain-free surgeries in the cosmetic world, eye lifts take about two hours, and they last over five years and often much longer.

What is a brow lift?

While eye lifts can be for functional purposes alone, brow lifts are generally solely cosmetic. These endoscopic surgeries, also known as forehead lifts, improve the appearance of your eyes by raising your brow and eliminating a tired, serious, or angry appearance. What most people don’t realize is that the eyebrow consists of a thickening of the skin and a fat pad that protects the bone around the eye. Brow lifts remove droopy skin that hoods upper eyelids and raises brows in a youthful arch, minimizing forehead and frown lines and rejuvenating your face.

To get an idea of what a brow lift would look like on you, place your thumb and index on your forehead halfway between your brows and hairline, and lift up. The result is smoother skin with fewer lines and creases in addition to slightly raised brows.

Combining the Two Procedures

A combination procedure may be ideal for you if you have sagging brows and excessive skin in the upper eyelids. We can use the same incision for a mild brow lift and an upper eyelid lift. We customize eyelid and brow lifts according to your concerns and pair these surgeries with other cosmetic surgeries, including facelifts.

Sometimes the wrinkles around the eyes are etched into the skin and cannot be removed by a blepharoplasty procedure alone. We tailor eyelid lifts to an individual patient’s needs to enhance a firmer, more youthful appearance. Adding some additional skin wrinkle treatments, such as laser resurfacing, injectable facial fillers, and Botox, to your procedure may bring you even closer to the brighter, more energetic look you deserve.

Combining cosmetic procedures can make an even greater difference in the elimination of long-term sun damage and aging while enhancing the look of your eyes, forehead, and brows and bringing out your innate beauty. We recommend you schedule an appointment with Dr. Gilbert and our team and discuss your options for achieving your facial rejuvenation goals.
